A Cook County, Illinois judge sentenced actor Jussie Smollett to five-months in prison followed by 30-months of probation.
Smollett faced as much as three years for staging a fake hate crime in Chicago and reporting it to police that his abductors yelled homophobic and racist slurs.
During the sentencing procedure, the judge told the Empire actor, (quote) “You’ve turned your life upside down by your misconduct and shenanigans. Your very name has become an adverb for lying.”
Smollett continued to claim innocence on Thursday. Even after the judge handed down the sentence, Smollett acted out and shouted, (quote) “I am innocent. I am not suicidal.” (Variety)
Thursday evening, Jussie Smollett’s Instagram account repeated that declaration. The person operating the account included the caption, (quote) “OUR BROTHER IS INNOCENT AND WE WILL KEEP FIGHTING. #FreeJussie”
