The Top 5 movies this weekend:
1. Men in Black: International – $28.5 million
2. The Secret Life of Pets 2 – $23.8 million
3. Aladdin (2019) – $16.7 million
4. Dark Phoenix – $9 million
5. Rocketman – $8.8 million
It wasn’t a good weekend for sequels. Men in Black: International and Shaft both fell well below expectations at the weekend box office.
Men in Black: International, starring Chris Hemsworth, opened in first with $28.5 million. That’s the lowest debut of any film in the franchise by at least $20 million.
Shaft, starring Samuel L. Jackson, failed to make the Top 5, premiering in sixth with $8.3 million — well below the $15 million it was expected to earn.
The Secret Life of Pets 2 dropped from first to second with $23.8 million, taking its 10-day total to $92 million.
Aladdin remained in third with $16.7 million. The live-action adaptation of the Disney classic has now banked $263.4 million.
More bad news for Dark Phoenix. After having the worst opening of any X-Men film, the sequel saw a 73% drop in its second weekend, taking in only $9 million. According to Box Office Mojo, “This is the second largest second-weekend drop for a film playing in over 3,500 theaters in its second weekend behind only 2015’s Fifty Shades of Grey.”
Rocketman stayed put in fifth with $8.8 million. The Elton John biopic has made $66.1 million in three weeks.
